Vibro Projects was contracted to speed up the consolidation of underlying soils by the drainage of pore water to an Arup design.
Solution
Vibro Projects utilised a rare form of ground improvement known as Band Drains. The installation of 3357no., 28,000lin.m Band Drains speeds up the consolidation of underlying soils by the drainage of pore water via the Colbond vertical drain, anchored into the ground by the metal plate. Pore water is drained into an underlying sand layer and up into the granular fill, which is placed after drain installation, to surcharge the ground. The installation of each Band Drain takes less than a minute, which allowed Vibro Projects to install around 3000lin.m in just one shift per machine.
